Addams Family Musical to Go Online?

It is a Springfield tradition to alternate between holding two large events that encompass a single year of Springfield: a musical and a school cup.

For a week in January to February 2020, we had the electrifying INVICTUS cup, and back in February 2019, we had WICKED: The Musical. This year, we will be doing the haunting yet heart-warming adaptation of The Addams Family Musical.

However, the coronavirus pandemic has caused things to come to a screeching halt, as lockdown has caused students from all over the world to adapt to online school.

So what could that mean for the musical?

“An online musical is something to consider,” explained Mr Djoharli Samsudin. “The performers will be doing it on stage, while the viewers could watch it at home. However, cost can be a concern. We can only charge so much for an online musical, and even then, we don’t know how many people will be watching it with the price of only one ticket.”

Although the production got off on a rocky start, it is no understatement to say that the musical has also made tremendous progress.

The ensemble has been practicing for their respective dance numbers, the fundraising team has been selling food and maintaining an online presence, and Caron Paige Karlam has been documenting the practices every week, including the main cast’s very first runthrough of Act 1 and Act 2.

Mr Djoharli also stated that, if following proper protocol, and with only 20 people or so, performers may be allowed to practise at school.

“This situation feels overwhelming for me and for everybody,” said Mr Hengky Antonius. “But I feel I have a great team behind my back, so it helps to feel like we can tackle anything that comes our way.”

Over the months of quarantine, a few musicals have actually begun showing up on YouTube, such as Beetlejuice and Beautiful. Still, although no one can fully prepare for what may happen, the cast and crew have their fingers crossed.
