Thoughts on Climate Change

Thoughts on Climate Change

As our first man-on-the-street column, one student and one teacher have been asked about their thoughts on climate change.

According to research done by NASA, the Earth’s average temperature has risen nearly one degrees Celsius since the year 1880. “Most people are not aware of the problem.” Aileen Keira, a student from the 11th grade said, “and our government isn’t doing anything to fix it. It’s not our fault.”

Dr. Khoe Yao Tung, a Further Mathematics teacher, said, “I think we should be aware of what’s happening to the North and South poles.” He continued, “if the temperature becomes higher, then the ice will melt and the volume of the ocean will increase. If this condition continues then even the smaller islands can disappear.”

“I think we should be more aware, not only for the temperature, but of pollution as well.” he said. “We should maintain the green areas so they can create more oxygen and keep our air fresh.”

When he was asked if our Indonesian government was doing enough to solve the problem, he said, “The government has too many issues. But the government should be more aware of the environment.”

Awareness seems to be the agreement.
